Family Transfers Reward Points Min

Without doubt, the biggest question we get asked at Pointrs is “How do I spend my Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points?”.

Unfortunately, the answer we always give is the answer they don’t want to hear. And the advice we always give is the advice they wish they were given years ago.

We tell them what they already know – it is not easy to spend your Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points, at least on flights. And we all know that flights, particularly in business or first class, are the best way to use any airline’s loyalty points and miles.

The advice we then give them is to not accumulate Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points in the first place. Most people accumulate Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points through credit card spend, and normally with direct earn credit cards, where the points are automatically transferred to Qantas Frequent Flyer.

One of the top Pointrs sins it to have a credit card that automatically transfers to one airline loyalty program. This is because the key to earning more points and miles, spending less points and miles and travelling better is the flexibility to use as many airline loyalty programs as possible. This allows you to use the loyalty program that requires the fewest points and miles for the flight you want to take. It also gives you the greatest choice of airlines.

Furthermore, it allows you to control when you transfer your points and miles from your credit card to your airline loyalty program. With airlines forever increasing the number of points and miles required for a flight, you don’t want your points trapped in the one airline loyalty program, hoping they don’t increase the number of points and miles required for flights. Also, by having the flexibility to transfer to many airline loyalty programs, it means you can take advantage of transfer bonuses whenever they arise.

Qantas Points "Family Transfers"

So, how has using your Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points become easier? Unfortunately, it is not in a way that suits you, but will suit others.

Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points can be transferred to other family members. They call this “Family Transfers”. Up until only recently, you could only transfer 5,000-600,000 Qantas Points per transaction, up to 600,000 in any 12-month period. Now, there is no limit to the number of Qantas Points you can transfer per transaction and per year. There is also no limit to the number of Qantas Points that can be received per transaction and per year.

What does this mean? Well, it means you can now transfer as many Qantas Points as you like to any eligible family member who needs them. So, if you can’t use the Qantas Points, and your family member needs some Qantas Points to book a flight, you can transfer as many points as you like to them and as often as you like. And you can do this with as many family members as needed. These family members can then book flights for themselves and their family members.

Eligible Family Members

As in case you’re wondering, an 'Eligible Family Member' means any person the Member can demonstrate, to the reasonable satisfaction of Qantas, as being related to that Member in any of the ways described below:

  • Husband/Wife
  • Parent/Step-parent
  • Domestic Partner/De Facto
  • Child, including foster and step-child
  • Brother/Sister
  • Half Brother/Sister
  • Grandparent
  • Grandchild
  • Son/Daughter-in-law
  • Brother/Sister-in-law
  • Father/Mother-in-law
  • Uncle/Aunt
  • Nephew/Niece
  • First cousin

So, don’t let those Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points go to waste! Transfer them to a family member who needs them. You never know, one day they might return the favour.
