  • Description

Get Ready To Save Big Each And Every Time On Taxes, Fees And Surcharges!

Jordan has his own business and every few months needs to fly from London to New York business class return for work.

Due to his British Airways Executive Club Gold status and accumulation of Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points, he likes to fly British Airways using Qantas Points.

Jordan is starting to resent having to pay the high taxes, fees and surcharges of approximately AUD 2,000 return.

He wants to know if there is anyway he can do to avoid paying these whilst still flying British Airways.

Jordan earns Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points mainly when he pays cash for his British Airways flights.

He also has an Australian American Express Platinum Business Card on which he earns approximately, on average, 130,000 American Express Membership Rewards (Ascent Premium) points per month.

    How Personal Pointr #4 works

    Step 1 of 7

Taxes, fees and surcharges differ amongst loyalty programs, even for the same flight.

    Step 2 of 7

Loyalty programs other than Qantas Frequent Flyer can be used to fly British Airways, and some of these loyalty programs may have lower taxes, fees and surcharges. You can refer to Pointr #1044 to find out how to fly British Airways using the points/miles of other airline loyalty programs.

    Step 3 of 7

You can earn points/miles with some of these loyalty programs by transferring your American Express Membership Rewards (Ascent Premium) points to them, allowing you to fly British Airways using points/miles of loyalty programs other than Qantas Frequent Flyer.

    Step 4 of 7

Looking at these loyalty programs, Cathay Pacific Cathay has the lowest taxes, fees and surcharges on business class return flights from New York to London on British Airways - $1,100. This is $1,000 cheaper than through Qantas Frequent Flyer, which charges $2,200. At the same time, the number of points/miles required is the same.

    Step 5 of 7

So, instead of using Qantas Frequent Flyer Qantas Points to fly business class return New York to London with British Airways, use the same number of Cathay Pacific Cathay Asia Miles transferred from American Express Membership Rewards (Ascent Premium). Pay $1,100 in taxes, fees and surcharges instead of $2,200 - a saving of $1,000 each time.

    Step 6 of 7

If you do not have a Cathay Pacific Cathay account, sign up for free.

    Step 7 of 7

When not using points to fly British Airways, and using cash instead, you can also elect to have any loyalty miles earned go to your Cathay Pacific Cathay account, instead of your Qantas Frequent Flyer account, and these miles can then be used to book future British Airways flights using Cathay Pacific Cathay.
