Delta Vs United Vs American Miles 2026 — Which Programme Is Actually Better

Quick Summary

Most Americans are loyal to the airline they fly most — but loyalty to the wrong programme costs thousands of miles per redemption. The honest comparison in 2026: United MileagePlus has the best partner network and transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards (the largest flexible points currency in the US), making it the strongest all-round programme for most Americans. Delta SkyMiles has the best domestic reach and a genuinely good cash-equivalent Business Class deal from New York (from $1,399 to London saving $2,601, Pointr #14300) — but its miles-based redemptions are the most expensive of the three: 260,000 SkyMiles for Los Angeles to Tokyo Business return versus 110,000 United miles for the same route. American AAdvantage sits between the two — 110,000–140,000 miles for Business Class to Europe, a strong partner network via oneworld, and useful Japan routes from Dallas on JAL. The verdict: if you hold Chase Ultimate Rewards, United is your programme. If you hold Amex MR or Citi and fly Delta's routes, AAdvantage or Flying Blue often beat Delta's own miles for Business Class. SkyMiles work best used for cash-equivalent Business Class deals — not for miles-based award bookings, where the cost is nearly always prohibitive.

The three largest airline loyalty programmes in the US are Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus, and American AAdvantage. Between them they cover almost every route, every US hub, and almost every traveller's profile. And yet most Americans in all three programmes are making the same mistake: staying loyal to a programme because of the flights they take for work, when the miles redemption value of that programme is dramatically different from another they could easily be using instead.

This guide uses real Pointrs data to compare every major route side by side — Economy sweet spots, Business Class to Europe, Business Class to Japan — and tells you which programme wins on each, which one to avoid, and exactly which Pointr to check before you transfer a single mile.

Which is better — Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus, or American AAdvantage in 2026?

United MileagePlus is the best overall programme for most Americans in 2026 — it has the strongest partner network, accepts Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers at 1:1 (the most valuable transfer in the US points ecosystem), and prices Business Class to Europe at 100,000 miles and Tokyo at 110,000 miles (Pointrs #2054 and #2415). American AAdvantage is the best programme for Dallas-based travellers and oneworld alliance bookings — pricing Europe Business at 110,000–140,000 miles and Tokyo at 150,000 miles via JAL. Delta SkyMiles is the worst programme for miles-based award redemptions — it charges 260,000 miles for Los Angeles to Tokyo Business return (Pointr #13353) versus 110,000 on United, and has removed most partner award availability. However, Delta's cash-equivalent Business Class Pointrs are competitive: New York to London Business from $1,399 saving $2,601 (Pointr #14300) is actually cheaper than United's equivalent. The programme to choose depends on your home airport: if you're based at a United hub (Chicago, Houston, Denver, San Francisco, Newark), use MileagePlus. Dallas travellers benefit from AAdvantage. Delta hubs (Atlanta, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Detroit) are where Delta cash deals shine — just don't convert those SkyMiles into Business Class award bookings on long-haul routes.

United MileagePlus — the all-round winner

Hub airports: ORD, IAH, EWR, SFO, DEN, IAD, LAX
Alliance: Star Alliance (44 airlines)

United's strength is its partner network and its relationship with Chase Ultimate Rewards. Every major metric favours United over the other two for Business Class awards:

Route Miles/Price Saving Pointr
ORD → Amsterdam Business $1,199 Save $2,801 #2200
ORD → Frankfurt Business $1,199 Save $2,801 #2203

JFK → London Economy 40,000 miles Save 70,000 #12374
LAX → Cancun Economy 12,400 miles Save 47,600 #2560

American AAdvantage — the oneworld specialist

Hub airports: DFW, CLT, PHX, MIA, ORD, LAX, JFK
Alliance: oneworld (British Airways, JAL, Cathay, Qantas, Iberia, Finnair)

AAdvantage's core advantage is the oneworld alliance — giving access to British Airways, Cathay Pacific, JAL, Qantas, and Iberia products. Business Class pricing is 10%–40% more expensive than United but the oneworld Sapphire status recognition (lounge access at partner airlines globally) adds real value.

Delta SkyMiles — strong for cash deals, poor for miles-based awards

Hub airports: ATL, MSP, DTW, SLC, LAX, JFK, BOS, SEA
Alliance: SkyTeam

Delta's cash-equivalent Business Class deals are genuinely competitive — but its miles-based long-haul Business Class pricing is the worst of the three major US programmes by a significant margin.

Route Miles/Price vs United Pointr
JFK → London Business (cash) ✓ $1,399 $200 cheaper than United #14300
JFK → Amsterdam Business (cash) ✓ $1,399 $200 cheaper than United #14293
JFK → London Business (miles) 95,000 miles Save 185,000 #13324
JFK → London Economy ✓ 30,000 miles 10,000 cheaper than United #12359
LAX → Tokyo Business (miles) ✗ 260,000 miles 2.4x United's 110,000 #13353
ATL → Tokyo Business (miles) ✗ 330,000 miles 3x United's 110,000 #9840
LAX → Honolulu Economy 32,000 miles 8,000 more than United #12285

The Delta miles trap

260,000 Delta SkyMiles to fly Business Class from Los Angeles to Tokyo. 110,000 United miles for the exact same route and cabin — 150,000 miles less. That 150,000-mile difference represents roughly 8–12 months of credit card spending on a Delta co-brand card. If you have Delta SkyMiles and want to fly Business Class to Japan, use them for a domestic connection to a United hub and book the Pacific on United MileagePlus. Never spend 260,000 SkyMiles when 110,000 United miles does the same job.

Where Delta SkyMiles DO work:

  • Cash-equivalent Business Class deals from New York — from $1,399 (Pointrs #14300, #14293, #14298, #14307) — these are among the cheapest Business Class cash deals from JFK
  • London Economy from JFK at 30,000 miles (Pointr #12359, save 42,000) — cheaper than United's 40,000

Which programme to choose — based on your home airport

The right programme isn't a fixed answer — it depends primarily on where you live and what routes you actually fly.

Chicago (ORD) United Home hub, $1,199 Europe Business, 110K Tokyo
Houston (IAH) United Strong hub, $1,199 Europe Business
Dallas (DFW) American Home hub, oneworld, JAL Tokyo access
Atlanta (ATL) Delta cash deals only Use Delta $1,399 Business, not 330K Tokyo miles
New York (JFK/EWR) United (miles) / Delta (cash) Best miles: United 40K London Eco; best cash: Delta $1,399 Business
Los Angeles (LAX) United 12,400 Cancun, 24K Honolulu, 110K Tokyo

United MileagePlus — 100% bonus buy miles (Pointr #39242 and #1012)

Best top-up

United runs 100% bonus buy-miles promotions multiple times per year — when active, buying miles at double and redeeming for a specific Business Class Pointr can be cost-effective. Transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1:1 is always available and posts in minutes — the fastest way to top up any MileagePlus balance.

American AAdvantage — 50% discount buy miles (Pointr #1025)

Use for top-ups

AAdvantage miles can be purchased at a 50% discount when Pointr #1025 is active — useful for closing a small gap to a specific oneworld partner redemption. Transfer from other members: Pointr #6057 and #39244. AAdvantage has limited flexible card transfer partners — Citi TYP does not transfer to AAdvantage directly.

Earn More Pointrs: #1024 (standard buy) · #1025 (50% discount when active) · #1135 (transfer from other programmes) · #6057 (transfer from other members)

Delta SkyMiles — 75% bonus buy miles (Pointr #1033) — use carefully

Only for cash deals

Delta offers a 75% bonus buy-miles promotion via Pointr #1033. Given SkyMiles' poor miles-based redemption value for long-haul Business Class, only buy Delta SkyMiles if you have a specific cash-equivalent Pointr confirmed (like the $1,399 London Business Class deal) and need a small top-up. No major flexible card currency transfers to Delta — SkyMiles can only be earned via Delta flights and co-brand spending.
